Chatfield to Waterton Canyon

October 18, 2026 · 2 min read

Enjoy this nice fall ride heading southwest along the High Line Canal Trail towards its starting point which I accessed via cutting through Chatfield State Park. The source of the canal is at the top of the canyon itself, the descent of which is deserving of its own separate video. I will post that at some point, and hopefully it will include some Bighorn Sheep who often graze on the brush sprouting from the canyon rocks. The High Line Canal and the resulting trail built up from all the dirt that was moved to create it winds some 71 miles descending roughly one foot per mile until it peters out near Denver International Airport. It was built as an irrigation ditch diverting water from the South Platte River to settlers of the early Denver metro.

I meant to include some content riding along the Chatfield Reservoir Dam and then down into the state park, but something happened with my GoPro such that that content, when I looked at it after the ride, was upside down despite there being no setting on the camera itself that I could find to flip it! All that jostling around must have really pissed it off!
